Which Diet?

The weight-loss methods and supplements below, are recommended by expert nutritionist Patrick Holford. A pioneer in nutrition and founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in 1984, Patrick’s Low GL Diet has been followed by thousands over the last two decades. As the science has developed, he has since added three programmes that complement and work alongside his Low GL Diet – The 5 Day Diet, The Hybrid Diet and Burn Fat Fast.

The Low GL Diet

This diet is a tried and tested lifestyle, rather than just a ‘diet’. By definition it is a diet that keeps your blood sugar even. This means that you produce little insulin which is the fat-storing hormone. The Low GL Diet is a fantastic diet for everyone. The Low GL Diet can be followed by diabetics looking for support to reverse their diabetes. There is a ‘Say No to Diabetes Combo’ to support this.

The 5 Day Diet

This is a strict hybrid/ketogenic diet based on the science in The Hybrid Diet book and which can be done intermittently while following the Low GL Diet. This low calorie ‘keto’ diet triggers a self-repair process, called ‘autophagy’, which renews and rejuvenates your cells, reboots your metabolism and detoxifies your body. This diet is for five days – monthly or quarterly – to lose weight, supercharge your energy, rejuvenate your cells, restore full immunity, and transform your health. A specific supplement programme is required in order to do this diet.

The Hybrid Diet

This is a flexible hybrid/ketogenic diet that can be done intermittently while following the Low GL diet as outlined in the book The Hybrid Diet (2019). The diet switches on your fat burning engine by changing to a high fat, low carb diet (HFLC) which triggers your body to run on ketones instead of glucose and triggers a self-repair process, called ‘autophagy’. This is not a Programme and doesn’t have a supplement Combo – ‘Hybrid’ branded supplements in the Metabolism range will support this diet.

Burn Fat Fast

While the The 5 Day Diet is a ‘full service’ for your metabolism, intermittent fasting keeps you tuned up along the way. Which Supplements?

The good news is that there is a range of quality supplements formulated by Patrick Holford to support healthy weight-loss and reduce feelings of hunger, on all of the diets.

Carboslow

The soluble fibre par excellence comes from the Konjac, a root vegetable from parts of Asia. Konjac fibre is high in glucomannan and the fibre is the most water-absorbent fibre of all, absorbing 100 times its weight in water. When you take glucomannan fibre in or before your meal, you feel fuller after your meal, plus it lowers the GL of the meal by slowing down the sugars in foods and thus helps to stabilise blood sugar. It is one of the few natural substances that is allowed to carry an EU health claim for weight loss if accompanied with a lower calorie diet. It’s formulated into Carboslow and used in all of the diets above and is essential in The 5 Day Diet/Hybrid Diet. It’s ideal support for any weight-loss programme.

GL Support

The Thai diet has many redeeming factors, and one is the widespread use of tamarind fruit, the rind of which we know as garcinia cambogia. It contains hydroxycitric acid, or HCA, which makes it harder for the body to turn sugar into fat. For this reason it has been formulated into GL Support and combined with Carnitine and Chromium. It is ideal if you are on any of the weight-loss programmes and is essential in The 5 Day Diet/Hybrid Diet. It can be combined with Carboslow.

Cinnachrome

Chromium is an essential mineral that helps to stabilise blood sugar levels by making you more sensitive to insulin. Supplementing chromium has been shown to reduce appetite and promote weight loss which is why it has been formulated into Cinnachrome and then combined with cinnamon and Niacin. Containing 405ug of chromium, it is ideal if you are diabetic, have blood sugar balance issues or sugar cravings and can be combined with Carboslow for weight-loss support.

Patrick Holford always recommends his three daily essentials – Optimum Nutrition Formula, Essential Omegas and ImmuneC to be at the heart of a daily supplement regime for optimum health and also optimum weight-loss.
